Class Descriptions
Music and Arts Camps

I.Q Music- This class is specifically designed for children ages five to six years old that are interested in music! Students will learn basic music skills and theory concepts.  Spend the week exploring rhythm, instruments, and fun! Dance with the beat, play a new song, and grow in music. We will learn songs as a group and have daily activities designed to keep everyone involved and moving. From a bubble song, to a tree in the woods, a rhythm stick, to an ocean drum, we will explore all aspects of music in a fun fast paced environment.  Joanna Klett will be the instructor for both our July and August Camps!

Discovery Violin- Do you want to learn an instrument that is just your size? Experience the violin first hand! We will work on a proper holding position, bowing, producing good sound and how to play a simple melody or two. We will also learn a few things about pitch and rhythm along the way! A faculty member of Adventures in the Arts, Sandy McDonald has been teaching violin to children and adults for as long as she can remember. You have probably seen her in the Arkansas Symphony as Assistant Concertmaster in the many concerts they perform each year. Because of her passion in teaching young children, Sandy has attended training sessions and has obtained her certification in the Suzuki method of violin instruction. One of her greatest joys in life is being surrounded by music!  This class is offered in both our July and August Camps!

Discovery Young Idols- SING, DANCE, ACT, Be a STAR!!!  All included !!! Plus age -appropriate vocal technique and breathing. No Vocal abuse here, just beautiful singing! This class is taught both weeks of camp by Linda Austin. Linda teaches all ages from Preschool to College to Adults. Music brings great joy and makes our hearts happy. Let’s make music together!!

Watercolors and Wild Things!- Come enjoy making colorful works of art by observing the wild and wonderful birds of summer! With the help of a professional artist, students will draw, watercolor, and sculpt local birds while learning a little about their habits. There just may be a real, live feathered visitor in the classroom if we are lucky! Leslie Mangiamele, who teaches this class, is a professional artist and college educator. She has been an arts administrator at UALR and has taught studio art and art history for over 30 years. In addition, Leslie has taught children and adults in year-round community programs such as our Adventures in the Arts program right here at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church. Her greatest thrill is to discover and nurture budding talent! This class is offered in both our July and August Camps!

Masterworks in Sculpture- Children will create a varied array of 3-D projects!!  From papier-mâché animals, mobiles, headwear, to flower gardens as well as traditional clay.  Exploring the possibilities of shaping, forming and bending to learn about the world of sculpture. We will be using recycled, traditional and nontraditional materials as well as getting a little messy. Cindy Hedges will be conducting this class and has volunteered in lots of children art protects over 25 years. Her aim is to encourage children to discover their artistic side and to have fun!  This class is offered only in our July Camp.

Nifty Needlework- Nifty Needlework teaches how to thread a needle and sew on buttons and beads. Also simple hand sewing projects and counted cross stitch.  Some projects may include the use of yarn instead of thread. This fabulous class is lead by Linda Todd and is being offered in both camps! Linda is a retired Spanish teacher, who loves to travel and has even taken students to Europe! Now, Linda can be seen doing a lot of volunteer work as well as many hours of knitting. She has always loved creating things with her hands and has done many types of crafts and sewing throughout her life. This class is for ages seven and up and is offered in both our July and August Camps!!

Yoga- is a practice of strengthening, mobilizing, healing, and integrating all areas of the body and learning to release stress and tension in the mind. In these yoga classes, students will learn fundamental poses and sequences and their benefits, and have fun exploring new forms of movement. We will also practice stilling the mind and finding deep peace in meditation. We will work from the ground up, learning warrior poses that flow in a sequence as well as popular animal poses. This class is offered in both our July and August Camps! Camp 1 will be taught by Robin Shollmier.

We will be working with the Co-owner of the Arkansas Yoga Collective, Wesley Pilcher during our Camp 2. Wesley has been practicing yoga for 18 years and teaching for nine. Wesley’s teaching style comes from a unique combination of his training in the Dynamic Yoga Method with Matthew and Holly Krepps of Circle Yoga Shala and in the Yogic Arts developed by Duncan Wong. He has studied holistic healing through the Clayton College of Natural Medicine. He has also studied with Dr. Champa, an Ayurvedic and Tibetan doctor. Wesley was greatly influenced by David Crow, and expert in Ayurvedic and Chinese medical systems as well as botanical medicine and aromatherapy. This class is both fun and beneficial to the mind, body and soul for all ages!

Hip Hop- This fun and energetic class offers students a chance to learn hip hop moves and will be learning kid friendly routines to the music of Christian Hip Hop artists like TobyMac, Lecrae, and Andy Mineo. Along with choreography, they will be working with rhythm and timing and will also have an opportunity to create some of their own dance moves. Participants will need to wear loose comfortable clothing and tennis shoes. Hip Hop class will be taught by Kayla Derrick, who is a company member of New Creation Dance Company. Kayla has experience in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, lyrical, modern and hip hop.

Kayla's passion for dance began in her hometown of Heber Springs, Arkansas, where she performed and taught at local studios and participated in liturgical dance at her church. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance Performance with a minor in American Sign Language from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. During college, she was a dance instructor at the Arkansas School for the Deaf. Kayla is currently in her fifth season with New Creation Dance Company. This class is offered in both our July and August Camps!

Pound Rockout- Pound Rockout uses lightly weighted drumsticks called, Ripstix®, which will be provided.  POUND® fuses movement and music to improve the students focus, coordination, and physical fitness.  It is a Full-body workout that is for all ages and all levels. POUND® provides the perfect atmosphere for students to MOVE, ROCK, PLAY, and MAKE NOISE!   Kayla Derrick is so excited to be introducing this brand new class and this class is offered in both our July and August Camps!

Discovery Young Chefs- Come experience the joy of learning to be a young chef!! In this class we will learn about fun snacks and how to create them. Learn how to make a “Pizza Snake,” “Rice Crispy Animals,” edible “Mountains,” a “Bird’s Nest Pocket,” “Sweet Biscuits” and “Tortilla Wraps.” All edible projects will be subject to eating and having fun.  This class will be taught by our own James Maase, Minister of Music, Arts and Worship here at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church and Director of The Summer Music and Arts Camps. James is not a professional chef, but is an exceptional cook who loves to share his many wonderful dishes with his friends and others. All projects will be safe with no sharp objects used. Come and create. This class is for ages six and up and is offered in both our July and August Camps!!

Masters of Illusion- Let’s enter the wonderful and fascinating world of Magic where you will discover the mysterious secrets of some truly baffling illusions. As a beginner magician, you will learn basic performance technique and stage presence. Best of all, you’ll learn how you can amaze your friends with some really cool magic tricks! The Arkansas Masters of Illusion is lead by illusionist, Paul Carlon. In the past twenty years, Paul has had the opportunity to perform magic shows professionally in schools and for special events in Arkansas, Texas, Tennessee, Louisiana and California. Paul’s team of instructors are all members of the Arkansas Masters of Illusion. Members include Bill Fulton, Jimmy Rhodes, Blayk Puckett and Richard Knoll. All of them have teaching as well as professional performing experience. This class is offered only in our August Camp!

Viva el Espaňol- Learn conversational Spanish through vocabulary, songs and phrases.  Vocabulary includes greetings and expressions, colors, telling time, feelings, directions, rooms of the house and places, food and shopping, parts of the body and simple action words. This class is lead by Linda Todd and is being offered in both camps! Linda is a retired Spanish teacher.
